Victor Leal, of Hopatcong, already had an interest in architecture before enrolling in the Architectural Technology program at Sussex County Technical School (SCTS), but these classes further developed his passion for the career and provided him with the knowledge and tools to succeed.
Leal is grateful that his classes at SCTS offered hands-on experiences with many architectural programs so he could learn the tools professionals use and build his resume. He also appreciates the opportunities he had to participate in mock interviews with licensed architects and learn more about the field from those in it.
After graduating in 2024, Leal enrolled in the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), where he is studying to become a licensed architect.
“Studying architecture at SCTS helped prepare me for the next steps in my education,” emphasized Leal. “I feel beyond prepared compared to my peers at NJIT. Through the Architectural Technology course at my high school, I had more knowledge about the programs I needed to understand and use, as well as the mentality for the profession.”
Leal plans to graduate from NJIT and begin working as a nature-based architect. A nature-based architect incorporates natural elements into designs, creating spaces in buildings that highlight the outdoors and promote well-being.
“Victor was a driven, kind, and mature student whose dedication and passion for architecture was evident throughout his four years at SCTS,” said Stacy Crosson, vice principal of Career Technical Education at the school.
Leal’s guidance counselor, Ada Guarcello, remembers him as being extremely respectful.
“Victor will bring an extraordinary combination of intelligence, determination, and positivity to all his future endeavors,” she said.
During his time at SCTS, Leal always accepted educational challenges and won first place in a student holiday competition sponsored by the American Institute for Architecture his senior year, said Thomas Makris, instructor for the Architectural Technology program.
“Victor is an incredible human being with a good heart,” added Makris. “He will go far in life because he’s smart, considerate, ethical, respectful, and a very well-mannered young man.”
