As a child, Lavar Scott knew he wanted to be a race car driver. He had early exposure to the career with both his mother and brother in racing. Now, his childhood dreams are coming true.
Scott, of Carneys Point, is an American professional stock car racing driver who competes full-time in the ARCA Menards Series for Rev Racing. He drives the No. 6 Chevrolet SS and finished in third for the 2023 ARCA Menards Series East championship standings.
He has raced models in the NASCAR Advanced Auto Parts weekly series in 2022 and 2021, won at the Hickory Motor Speedway in 2021, and recorded multiple top five placements in 2022.
Scott is also a member of the NASCAR’S Drive for Diversity program, which encourages minority and female individuals to participate in the sport in a variety of roles as drivers, owners, sponsors and crew members.
But before beginning his journey as a race car driver, Scott gained important knowledge about the vehicles he is driving by studying in the Automotive Studies program at Salem County Vocational Technical School (SCVTS).
“I always had a love for cars and wanted to learn how they worked and how to keep them working,” said Scott, who graduated from the program in 2021. “It was just a natural fit enrolling in the auto program.”
The Automotive Studies program gives students a foundation in Automotive Technology and Collision Repair Technology. Advanced students have opportunities to perform services and diagnostic checks on vehicles from personnel and community members.
“I learned so much in the class about maintaining a vehicle and keeping it safe,” said Scott.
Today, that knowledge proves useful for helping him hit the track in the driver’s seat of a reliable car.
