Dan Campbell, a Flemington native, began preparing for a future in law enforcement as a student in the Law & Homeland Security program at Hunterdon County Vocational School District (HCVSD). A 2009 graduate of the program, Campbell appreciated how the coursework and hands-on experiences he received mirrored the realities of police work.
“When I attended the Law & Homeland Security program, we were tasked weekly with choosing a police incident either from the local newspaper or the internet and practicing writing our own investigation reports,” Campbell said. “Our instructor would provide feedback and corrections on how a report should be generated. This lesson was beneficial at the start of my career, because I already understood how reports should be written.”
After graduating from high school, Campbell continued his education at Raritan Valley Community College before pursuing a career in law enforcement. He later attended the Mercer County Police Academy, graduating with Class 27-22.
Campbell began his law enforcement career with the Hunterdon County Sheriff’s Office before joining the Raritan Township Police Department, where he has served for the past three years. He currently holds the rank of Patrolman and is assigned to the department’s Patrol Division.
During his time with the department, Campbell and fellow officers received a Unit Citation award from Hunterdon County Crime Stoppers for their role in solving a murder investigation.
Campbell said working with colleagues and across agencies is critical for any law enforcement professional and its something that he began to value as a student in HCVSD.
“One of my fondest memories was participating in field trips to several law enforcement and emergency management agencies,” he said. “Those visits helped me build relationships with individuals I now work with today. The program opened doors for me within the law enforcement community and helped me achieve my goal of becoming a police officer.”
