Michael Zayac, an Andover native, credits the Cinematography and Film/Video Production program at Sussex County Technical School for helping him launch a career in the video production industry. He is now paying the education he received forward as a cinematography instructor. His students benefit from the professional experiences he brings with him to enhance the curriculum.
A 2012 graduate of Sussex County Technical School, Zayac said his vocational education equipped him with practical skills and real-world experiences that gave him a significant advantage throughout college and his career.
“My time at Sussex County Technical School kickstarted a very lucrative and enjoyable career in the video production industry,” he said. “The vocational education I received allowed me to stand out in postsecondary classes and immediately led to my first career opportunities.”
After graduating from high school, Zayac earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in filmmaking from Montclair State University. Upon completing his degree, he entered the commercial video production industry as a lighting technician and camera operator, working in the field for more than a decade.
Zayac has worked with a wide range of high-profile clients, including MTV, Bravo, BMW, Volvo, Food Network, NFL, and MLB, as well as corporate, medical, and pharmaceutical brands. His work as a freelance camera operator and lighting technician enabled him to build a long-standing career in a fast-paced, competitive industry.
Recently, Zayac returned to Sussex County Technical School to share much of what he has learned throughout his career with the next generation. As a cinematography instructor, he focuses on preparing students to enter the video production field with both technical skills and strong professional character.
“As the cinematography instructor at Sussex Tech, my goal is to lead and encourage students to pursue a career in this field,” Zayac said. “I want them to stand out among other candidates because of their skill and character and to enjoy a career where they are excited to go to work every single day.”
