Richard DeLaMarter, a Woodbridge native, began his path toward a career in the electrical trade while enrolled in the Electrical Technology program at Perth Amboy Vocational and Technical School, now known as Perth Amboy Magnet School. The school is part of Middlesex County Magnet Schools.
A 2021 graduate, DeLaMarter credits his career and technical education (CTE) with preparing him for the demands of the electrical industry.
“The education that I received at Perth Amboy Vocational and Technical School absolutely helped prepare me for career success by teaching me the foundational information and hands-on skills needed to work in the field,” said DeLaMarter. “The program emphasized real-world applications, professionalism and problem-solving, which allowed me to transition confidently from the classroom to the workplace.”
DeLaMarter had the opportunity to apply much of what he learned as a SkillsUSA participant, earning first place in the New Jersey competition. That experience helped him stand out as he moved into the next phase of his career journey.
Following graduation, DeLaMarter entered an electrical apprenticeship through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 164, where he continues to build his skills while working in the field alongside various contractors.
“Through this experience, I have developed a strong work ethic, technical competency and the ability to collaborate effectively with others,” he said.
DeLaMarter added that being accepted into IBEW Local 164 is among his greatest professional accomplishments. In addition to his work with the electrical union, he runs his own business, Buddy Landscaping, demonstrating an entrepreneurial drive that was nurtured throughout his career-focused education.
DeLaMarter’s experiences highlight how CTE can provide clear pathways into skilled trades, combining classroom instruction and mentorship, hands-on training and apprenticeship opportunities to support long-term career growth.
