CTE Success Story: Dominic Roberts, graduate from Atlantic County Institute of Technology Performing Arts Program

Dominic Roberts, a Galloway Twp. native, has danced on the stages of well-known theaters, including Carnegie Hall, New York City Center, Ailey Citigroup Theater, Henry J. Leir Stage and many more. But the Performing Arts Center at the Atlantic County Institute of Technology (ACIT) is the theater that holds some of Roberts’ most cherished memories.

A 2022 graduate of ACIT’s Performing Arts program, Roberts developed his artistic vision and explored various aspects of theater while at the school. He said the education he received at ACIT has been crucial to his development as a movement artist.

“Studying Laban/Bartenieff movement analysis under Lisa Zeuner as part of the program has allowed me to grasp a finer understanding of movement creation,” said Roberts. “Atlantic County Institute of Technology gave me the safety net of experimentation, allowing me to sharpen my skills while simultaneously trying new dance languages.”

After graduation, Roberts continued his training in the Ailey/Fordham Bachelor of Fine Arts program in New York City, where he studied under leading choreographers and directors in the industry.

Today, Roberts works as a dance teaching assistant at The Ailey School while freelancing in productions throughout New York City. His choreography has been showcased at The Ailey School, Earl Mosley Diversity of the Arts and the Museum of Arts and Design.

“While at Atlantic County Institute of Technology, I learned that I do not have to mold into a singular sculpture that society has made out for me,” Roberts said. “I can uniquely merge my different artistic disciplines to make me a well-attributed artist and citizen.”

Roberts’ experience reflects how career and technical education can provide young artists with both technical training and the creative freedom needed to pursue professional careers in the performing arts.
