BCIT Students Help Build Habitat for Humanity Home in Camden (TAPinto)

BCIT Students Help Build Habitat for Humanity Home in CamdenBurlington County Institute of Technology (BCIT) staff recently joined Habitat for Humanity of South Central New Jersey to celebrate the dedication of a newly completed home on Royden Street in Camden. The ceremony included the official presentation of keys to the new homeowner, marking the start of a new chapter for the family.

Last school year, 21 BCIT students from the Architecture and Design, Construction, HVAC, and Electrical programs volunteered at the build site as part of their Work-Based Learning (WBL) initiative. Wearing hard hats and tool belts, they framed walls, reviewed blueprints, and installed structural elements that became an essential part of the finished home.

“This program allows students to gain hands-on construction experience alongside trained staff while also giving back to the community,” said Laura Van Booven, Director of Community Engagement for Habitat for Humanity.

Students said the experience gave them a new perspective.

“Being able to work on an actual home build was a great learning experience. It gave me a better understanding of the construction process,” said James Chase, Construction Trades student.

“I really enjoyed this experience. It was a great opportunity to apply what we’ve learned in class and work alongside professionals,” added Jeffrey Sprenkel, an Electrical student.

Work-Based Learning Coordinator Joseph Rivera, who attended the dedication, sees the Habitat partnership as central to BCIT’s mission.

“This provides students with real-world training while fostering a lasting impact in the community,” Rivera said. “These experiences help shape skilled professionals who are also engaged citizens.”

This was the first time BCIT students participated in a Habitat build, but the success of the collaboration has already led to a continuing partnership that strengthens both career preparation and community engagement.
