CTE Success Story: Dr. Kevin Schmidt from Camden County Technical School

Kevin Schmidt, Ed.D., began exploring engineering and technology as a student in the Electronics program at Camden County Technical Schools (CCTS). A 1986 graduate, he credits his career and technical education with giving him a head start to dive into learning about different areas of engineering and technology and eventually share what he has learned as an educator.

After graduating high school, Dr. Schmidt continued his educational journey. He earned an associate degree in electromechanical engineering from Camden County College and a bachelor’s degree in electrical electronic technology from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He later completed a master’s degree in computer information systems and a doctorate in education, reflecting his commitment to both technical expertise and instructional leadership.

Dr. Schmidt made a career out of his many passions – lifelong learning and the STEM fields. He has spent more than three decades at Camden County College, where he is the director of engineering and technology programs. In this role, he teaches a range of technical courses, including computer numerical controls (CNC), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), AutoCAD and networking, while also overseeing and supporting engineering and manufacturing programs.

Throughout his career, Dr. Schmidt has remained closely connected to Camden County Technical Schools. He has supported curriculum development, advised on program design and contributed to the expansion of manufacturing and engineering education opportunities. He also helped establish dual-credit opportunities that allow CCTS students to earn college-level credits while still enrolled in high school.

Since 1998, Dr. Schmidt has provided technical and machining support to the district’s FIRST Robotics Team and has worked to expand access to hands-on technical training through grant-funded initiatives and innovative instructional approaches.

Dr. Schmidt’s career demonstrates how a passion ignited in a career and technical education program can lead to a fulfilling life. He remains engaged in learning and sharing his own knowledge with others.
